First-Principles Engineering
Why it matters
Construction is the most tradition-bound industry humans still run. The stagnation is measured: in the two decades McKinsey Global Institute counted, construction labor productivity grew about 1 percent a year worldwide while manufacturing managed 3.6. Methods pass down by imitation until how it's done hardens into how it must be done. First-principles engineering refuses that inheritance. It strips a problem to its raw facts (physical limits, material costs, energy flows) and rebuilds the answer from there. Physics outvotes habit whenever the two disagree. It is how stagnant industries get unstuck, the method we at 001 admire in Tesla's story. Only that method works where tradition has no precedent to copy: a net-zero, maximally autonomous community building in the Carpathians — the kind 001 is designing at Unity Hub — has no how it's done to inherit. Thinking from physics, not tradition, is the lab's opening line for a reason. Every other paradigm in this catalog is downstream of it.
Role in 001's holistic picture
First principles is the how behind the whole Foundation: the Living Lab is where its answers get tested, Systemic Affordability is its favourite result (cost drops when reasoning replaces convention), and Open Methodology publishes its chains of reasoning, including the reversals. Only a method that can change its mind counts as reasoning. The method is visible in full in winter-optimized PV and Passive & Low-Energy Cooling.
How 001 engages with it
001's own first-principles turn has a birthplace: the Hlibivka concept (2021). There 001 stopped trusting the received practice of the Ukrainian development industry and re-thought the building from raw facts with architect Semen Polomanyi. The result diverged from everything a local developer of the time would have drawn. That same reflex shows in the smallest moves: House 001's heat pump is a converted air-to-air air conditioner, reasoned from the plain fact that an air conditioner already contains the entire heat-pump machine. And the published analyses show the method end to end. The winter PV analysis began by refusing the universal advice ("face south, tilt at latitude"). Its silent assumption — annual optimization on a grid — proved false at Tepla Gora. Reasoning from diffuse light and snow albedo landed on vertical bifacial fences that no standard tool would suggest. The cooling story met a 40 kW load not by buying a 40 kW machine but by asking where the kilowatts came from. Ninety percent of them arrived as sunlight through glass. Shutters, a dew point, and the night dissolved the problem. Every chain is published with its assumptions named, so readers can attack the arithmetic rather than trust the brand.
Maturity: applied. The lab's standing method, demonstrated end-to-end in published analyses.
