Four Pillars Model
Why it matters
The technology exists. Sustainable building fails most often from unbalanced ambition: the hyper-efficient house nobody can afford, the affordable one that's miserable to live in, the autonomous fortress that trashed its site, the eco-showpiece that depends on the grid it despises. The Four Pillars model is 001's own framework for refusing all four failures at once: affordability, comfort and health, autonomy, and environmental sustainability. These are four interdependent goals that define truly sustainable architecture. Sacrificing any one voids the claim. Its power is adjudication. Every real project is made of trade-offs. When they arrive, the model names which pillar is paying and demands the price be acknowledged in the open.
Role in 001's holistic picture
The rest of the catalog elaborates the pillars: Systemic Affordability the first, Indoor Environmental Quality the second, Building Autonomy the third, and the materials-and-regeneration senses the fourth. Regenerative Architecture is that fourth pillar's far horizon. Both our Energy and Water Innovation Models run on the model: the same four tests applied to every layer. Per Open Methodology, it is published unpatented: a framework offered, not owned.
How 001 engages with it
The model is our published framework, presented on the Innovations page with an explicit disclaimer that it is not patented or registered IP. Our projects are its worked examples. House 001 puts the trade-offs on display. Its envelope is drawn at a deliberate 20 cm baseline to test natural insulation. Its full heating-season electricity — 42.77 kWh/m², in air-to-air fallback mode — is published rather than hidden, along with the honest analysis of why no clean envelope verdict can be read through the house's broken heat-delivery chain. The same house refuses to compromise comfort (composting toilet, fresh air, an inhabited terrace) or sustainability (a published carbon ledger). Unity Hub balances differently: low-energy fabric, machine-light cooling, autonomy engineered to community scale. Its published decision journeys repeatedly show pillar-versus-pillar adjudication in the open, from the affordability arithmetic of the heating options to the comfort argument that killed the chilled floors.
